Message From Arizona State Treasurer

Greetings Biltmore Area Partnership Members,

Did you know that April is Financial Literacy Month? It’s a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of wise money management. Being smart about handling finances is more important than ever, as families experience higher prices from groceries to gasoline.

During work hours at the State Capitol, people address me as “Madam Treasurer,” but when I am at home, my young children call me “Mom.” In both roles, I encourage the message of being smart about managing money and believe it’s important that parents teach this important life skill early on, especially when it comes to savings.

Why is financial education so important right now? Americans’ total credit card balances reached $986 billion. Student loan debt is over $1.75 trillion. It is essential that our youth understand basic money management and don’t fall into the dangerous cycle of debt, especially during this time of fiscal uncertainty.

Teaching your children to be savers, not spenders.

The earlier a child understands the basic concepts of money management, the more likely they’ll be able to engrain long lasting behaviors. Reports indicate a child’s saving and spending habits are established at an early age, even as early as preschool. Here are several practical tips to help you teach your children different concepts about money management and the life skill of saving their money.

Walk the talk. Talk about what you are saving for and what sacrifices you make for vacations, their college and retirement, then demonstrate examples with them. Take them with you to the bank when you make a deposit or show them how you do it on your phone or laptop for online banking. You can also save for something together as a family and show them how you are setting aside money.

Earn it. I am a big proponent of encouraging children to earn their own money, from doing chores to paying a child to complete a project. For instance, organize with a family member like an aunt, uncle or grandparent how your child can earn some extra cash. Children may enjoy pet sitting or yard work like mowing a lawn or helping with household tasks.  This helps them learn at an early age that it takes work and effort to earn money, and that money shouldn’t be a hand out. When children start earning their own money, they can appreciate and be good stewards of those funds.

Match it. Reward your child’s good saving habits by matching their savings and encouraging them to delay gratification by saving for something they really want, which could take months. Set a time frame for how long they can save their money and then consider matching the amount if they reach their goals. This teaches them the basic skills of compound interest, growing money with savings, and the concepts of long term investing.

Make it fun. Conversations with children about money should be fun, light and not intimidating.  Create an activity that can be hands-on, like crafts or a game. For instance, go to a pottery painting shop to help them paint their own piggy bank. If your child likes video games, look online for free financial literacy games. There are tons of different free games for kids that will keep them engaged while having fun!

Jump start college and career savings. Give children a boost with saving for their future education by setting-up a tax-deductible AZ529 Education Savings Plan. The AZ529 is a state-sponsored education savings plan where earnings grow tax-free. For those who invest in an AZ529 Plan, the State of Arizona offers a state tax deduction up to $2,000 per beneficiary for individual tax filers and up to $4,000 per beneficiary for married tax filers who file a joint return. Qualified educational expenses include tuition and fees, books, computers and room and board. Additionally, friends and family members may add to a child’s AZ529 account at any time through gifting and earn the same tax benefits for themselves. Also, starting in 2024, any savings that are left over in a child’s 529 account can be rolled over into a Roth-IRA to help them save for their future retirement. For more information about AZ529, visit www.az529.gov.

Make the most of Financial Literacy Month

During my first term as Treasurer, I launched the Financial Education Portal on the Arizona Treasurer’s Office website. I invite Arizonans to explore these helpful resources and tools available through this portal to grow a deeper understanding about personal finance and the value of saving. Making smart, informed financial and economic decisions will position Arizonans to achieve financial freedom and success. For more information or to access the Financial Education Portal, please visit: https://www.aztreasury.gov/financial-education.

In honor of Financial Literacy Month, I encourage every parent to do their best to help children develop a good relationship with money management. It is also the perfect time for adults to examine their own personal financial resiliency. How can we better manage our money? Are we financially prepared for future, unexpected emergencies? Financial literacy strengthens not only individuals and families, but also the overall economic health of our communities.

As always, if you or your organization require my Office’s assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us at (602) 542-7800 or aztreasury.gov/contact.

Arizona Biltmore Golf Club and Adobe Restaurant

Adobe Course Closes For Renovations: Beginning Tuesday, April 4th, the Adobe Golf Course will be closed for course renovations. Led by the Lehman Design Group and Scottsdale resident Tom Lehman, the golf course renovation project will infuse modern golf course design and water conservation technology. The original William Bell designed golf course first opened for play in 1929. During the renovation, crews will install a new, more efficient irrigation system and plant new drought tolerant TifTuf Bermudagrass throughout the golf course. In addition, green complexes will be renovated, tee boxes will be laser leveled, and bunkers will be rebuilt incorporating a technically advanced drainage and liner system. Throughout the renovation, the general routing and par (71) of the golf course will be consistent with the Adobe’s famous parkland setting. The Adobe Course is expected to reopen for public and member play this fall. For your safety, please stay off the golf course during construction.

New Golf Shop: The beautiful new golf shop is now open at the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club. Designed by Douglas Fredrikson, AIA and Alexandra Lemos of Phoenix-based Douglas Fredrikson Architects, the building includes retail and office space, locker rooms for members, fitting rooms, restrooms and over 13,000 sq. ft. of underground golf cart storage. The single-story building features Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired architecture, blending a modern southwest design with many notable elements of the Biltmore Resort and community, including the signature concrete Biltmore block and patina copper fascia prominent in the resort’s motif. If you haven’t done so already, we encourage you to stop by and check out the new building.

New Clubhouse Construction: Construction on the new clubhouse and restaurant has begun. The new clubhouse will replace the existing event tent and clubhouse, and will also bring additional on-site parking plus landscape improvements. The clubhouse project is expected to be completed next year.

The Adobe Restaurant and Bar ARE OPEN: The Adobe Restaurant and Bar will remain open for business during phase two of clubhouse construction for breakfast, lunch or afternoon happy hour. The Adobe Restaurant is a great spot to enjoy a meal, while getting a birds-eye view of clubhouse construction.

Adobe Happy Hour and Spring Hours: Happy Hour starts at 2 pm. Draft specials include $4 Barn Brews, $4 Michelob Ultras, $4 Domestic Cans, and $5 Seasonal Craft Selection; Wine Specials include $5 House White/Red and Bubbles; and all Craft Cocktails are $8. Adobe Spring hours are now 6:30 am to 6 pm daily, with the kitchen closing at 3 pm Monday – Thursday, and 4 pm Friday – Sunday.

No Trespassing: A friendly reminder that the Arizona Biltmore Golf Courses are private property. Use of the golf courses is reserved for members and customers of the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club. Trespassers, including (but not limited to) walkers, joggers and those walking pets, will be cited. Also, please do not enter the clubhouse construction area at any time. We appreciate your cooperation.

COOL DINING IN LON’S UNDERGROUND WINE CELLAR

The return of 100+ degree temperatures in the greater Phoenix area also ushers in a cool reprieve in the form of a one-of-a-kind culinary experience in the underground wine cellar at LON’s at the Hermosa.Beginning June 1 through September 10, the hotel’s signature restaurant will open its private subterranean wine cellar to offer guests and Valley residents a special five-course tasting menu (chef’s selection) for $125/person, not including tax and gratuity. Wine pairings are an additional $75 per person.

Cool (in every sense of the word), the cellar—kept at 57 degrees—is normally reserved exclusively for private events, but based on availability, it will be open for parties of two or more, Thursday through Sunday nights. The Patagonian Shrimp Tacos, the Megargee Trio of corn chips, warm queso, guacamole and roasted salsa roja, and the ever-popular Cellar Board with a carafe of wine, are ideal for sharing, particularly during the extended summer happy hours, which are daily, from 3-7 pm, June 1 through September 10, 2023.

100TH ANNIVERSARY OF ‘THE LAST DROP’ PAINTING BY LON MEGARGEE

In 1923, the Stetson Hat Company commissioned what may be the most famous cowboy image of all time: The Last Drop From His Stetson, by Lon Megargee, which depicted a kindly cowboy kneeling to give his horse a drink of water from his upturned hat. It has become a hallmark of cowboy culture and an icon of the Stetson brand, as it has been imprinted on the lining of its upscale hats for the past 100 years. While the original oil painting hangs in Stetson’s New York City headquarters, a framed print adorns the hotel’s bar, aptly named LON’s Last Drop.

To commemorate the centennial, The Hermosa Inn will be celebrating with:

100th Anniversary Celebration Getaway: Book two nights in a deluxe casita and get a third night free. Valid April 2-May 28, 2023.
