The Camelback Pedestrian Underpass offers both a safe cross for pedestrians, and an elegant new work of public art. The floor of the underpass has been transformed into a floral "carpet" made out of exterior-grade terrazzo flooring. The welcoming carpte playfully conflates the idea of indoor and outdoor space with a colorful pattern inspired by Arizona desert flowers and butterflies. The artists chose to focus on the floor of the underpass in transforming a utilitarian crossing into an inviting community space. The completed floor is composed of thirteen specially formulated colors that use recycled glass and other materials ina polyacrylate terrazzo. The work features large-scale flowers and 166 individual butterflies. The Camelback Pedestrian Underpass continues the tradition of public art and infrastructure projects that have defined the City of Phoenix public art program. |
The Biltmore Area Partnership worked with the City of Phoenix to establish the new pedestrian crossing under Camelback Road midblock between 24th and 26th Streets. This pedestrian-friendly underbridge allows pedestrians to safely cross Camelback Road through park-like areas at Biltmore Fashion Park and the Esplanade. |
